Togo is tightening its ties with Russia. President Faure Gnassingbe met Vladimir Putin in Moscow, where both sides agreed to open embassies in 2025, marking a major diplomatic shift. The move comes as several African nations, especially former French colonies, distance themselves from the West and deepen cooperation with Moscow in defence, energy and security. Russia has already expanded its presence in Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger, and sees Togo as another key foothold. With anti-France sentiment rising across the region, Moscow’s influence in Africa is growing faster than ever.
