Ten days after Madagascar’s military takeover, ousted President Andry Rajoelina has been stripped of his Malagasy nationality. The new government revoked his citizenship, citing laws that bar dual nationality after it emerged, he had secretly obtained French citizenship in 2014. Rajoelina fled the country amid mass protests over economic hardship, power cuts, and corruption, which later saw soldiers join demonstrators. The unrest left at least 22 people dead. His removal marks a dramatic reversal for the former leader, who first rose to power in a 2009 coup. Critics accuse him of authoritarianism, corruption, and being too close to France.
