Nigeria has charged activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore over social media posts accusing President Bola Tinubu of corruption. The Department of State Services (DSS) claims the posts were false, malicious, and intended to incite public disorder. Sowore, who unsuccessfully contested the 2019 and 2023 elections, faces five counts of cybercrime. In a rare move, Nigeria has also dragged social media platforms X and Meta to court over the same posts, with the government listed as complainant and Sowore, X, and Meta named as defendants. The case highlights growing tensions around free speech, online criticism, and accountability in Nigeria.
