Nigeria's oil sector is facing a double threat, battling both international criminal gangs and domestic "oil mafia". The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC) has voiced concern over sophisticated international syndicates that exploit security weaknesses across Africa to steal billions of dollars of crude oil annually. The scale of the problem was recently highlighted by the Nigerian army's crackdown, which led to the seizure of over 32,000 gallons of stolen petroleum and 69 arrests in a single operation. Meanwhile, the country's new Dangote Refinery, Africa's largest, is under attack from a local oil mafia. According to Aliko Dangote, the refinery is being deliberately sabotaged by powerful groups that have long profited from government subsidies on imported petroleum products.
