Nigeria Drops Mother Tongue, Brings English Back To Schools | Firstpost Africa

Nigeria is caught in a debate over how its children should learn. The government has scrapped a programme that allowed primary school students to study in their mother tongue, pushing them back toward English. Educators say early learning is collapsing because children can’t understand the language of instruction. The shift comes on top of an already broken system where ten million children are out of school, teachers are underpaid, and classrooms lack basic resources. Corruption keeps draining funds meant for books and training. The language fight is exposing the gaps in the already-strained education system of Nigeria.
