Niger has announced new restrictions on visa delivery for Europeans in a tit-for-tat move, citing the difficulties its own citizens face in obtaining Schengen visas. Until now, Nigeriens could apply through European consulates in Niamey, but many have had to travel abroad after services were curtailed, especially following the collapse of ties with France. In response, Niger’s junta government declared that only its embassies in Geneva, Ankara and Moscow will now process visas for nationals of Italy, Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands and the UK. Niamey says the decision is based on the principle of reciprocity.
