Morocco has been hit by the largest anti-government protests in years, spearheaded primarily by Gen Z protesters. Hundreds of young Moroccans marched in at least eleven cities, including Rabat and Casablanca, on Saturday (September 27) and Sunday (September 28), clashing with police and leading to dozens of arrests. The protests were widely publicised on social media, distinguishing them from past movements led by unions or political parties. Public discontent has been on the rise over corruption and the government’s “misplaced priorities”. Protesters have accused the government of pouring money into massive international sporting events, such as the upcoming 2030 FIFA World Cup co-host bid and the Africa Cup of Nations, while neglecting essential public services such as health and education.
