At least 27 African migrants, including three minors and seven women, have died after two overcrowded boats capsized off Italy’s Lampedusa island. The vessels, carrying over 90 people, had departed from Libya when one began taking on water, prompting passengers to climb onto the other, which also overturned. Survivors are mostly Somali, with some Egyptians and unaccompanied Pakistani minors. Around 60 people have been rescued as search operations continue. The Central Mediterranean route from North Africa to Italy or Malta,  remains the world’s deadliest migrant crossing, with over 700 deaths recorded in 2025 despite Italy’s migration-curbing agreement with Libya.
