An elite Madagascar military unit, CAPSAT, has reportedly seized power after President Andry Rajoelina fled the country amid weeks of youth-led protests. The national assembly voted to impeach Rajoelina for desertion of duty, just hours after he attempted to dissolve parliament by decree. The unrest, initially sparked by power and water shortages, has grown into a nationwide anti-government movement. Rajoelina is said to have left on a French military aircraft following reports of an attack on his life. France’s President Emmanuel Macron has called for constitutional order to be maintained and warned against military exploitation of public grievances.
