Gen Z protesters have taken to the streets in Morocco and Madagascar to protest against their respective governments. Hundreds of young Moroccans marched in at least eleven cities, including Rabat and Casablanca, on Saturday (September 27) and Sunday (September 28), clashing with police and leading to dozens of arrests. Public discontent has been on the rise over corruption and the government’s “misplaced priorities”. Protesters have accused the government of pouring money into massive international sporting events, such as the upcoming 2030 FIFA World Cup co-host bid and the Africa Cup of Nations, while neglecting essential public services such as health and education. Meanwhile, massive anti-government protests have engulfed Madagascar, with young people leading demonstrations in the capital, Antananarivo, over persistent water and power cuts. The unrest, which began last Thursday, turned violent over the weekend, with clashes between protesters and security forces, reports of looting, and property damage.
