Libya’s interim Education Minister Ali al-Abed has been arrested amid a major textbook scandal, accused of harming the public interest and violating students’ right to education. Prosecutors allege irregularities in contracts to print schoolbooks, leaving over two million students without textbooks for the 2025–26 school year, which began a month late. Parents have been forced to pay for photocopies as the printed books reportedly remain stuck in Italian ports.
