Libya’s interim Education Minister Ali al-Abed has been arrested amid a major textbook scandal, accused of harming the public interest and violating students’ right to education. Prosecutors allege irregularities in contracts to print schoolbooks, leaving over two million students without textbooks for the 2025–26 school year, which began a month late. Parents have been forced to pay for photocopies as the printed books reportedly remain stuck in Italian ports. This marks Libya’s second education minister detained in similar circumstances, highlighting the deepening crisis in Libya’s education system, plagued by corruption, infrastructure damage, and ongoing political instability.
