An uneasy calm has settled over Guinea-Bissau after a dramatic military takeover forced President Umaro Sissoco Embaló to flee to Senegal. The army has installed Major-General Horta Inta-A as transitional president for one year, claiming the coup was necessary to stop drug traffickers from undermining national security and democracy. The power shift halted the release of presidential election results, triggered temporary border closures, and imposed a strict ban on media programming and public protests. Opposition candidate Fernando Dias da Costa, who claims he won the election, says the coup was "fabricated" to keep Embaló in power.
