Google Maps has sparked controversy after reports showed the border between Morocco and Western Sahara disappearing for users in Morocco following the UN Security Council’s endorsement of Rabat’s autonomy plan. Western Sahara, a mineral-rich region annexed by Morocco in 1975, remains contested by the Algeria-backed Polisario Front. The UN has now backed Morocco’s 2007 autonomy plan as the most practical solution, prompting Morocco to declare October 31 a national unity holiday.
