A tech race is heating up in Africa, with global giants and regional entrepreneurs vying to control the continent’s digital future. Google has announced plans to build four infrastructure hubs to connect its latest underwater fibre-optic cables for Africa. The tech giant has also claimed to have surpassed its $1 billion investment target in the continent, which it had set in 2021. Meanwhile, Microsoft is also making significant moves, with plans for a $1 billion geothermal-powered data centre in Kenya and a nearly $300 million investment in AI capacity in South Africa. African business leaders are also joining the fray, with Zimbabwean tycoon Strive Masiyiwa announcing a $720 million plan to build five AI factories across the continent to reduce reliance on overseas cloud providers.
