Ghana has yet again defended its deportation agreement with the US after the Trump administration reversed visa restrictions last week, a move hailed as a major diplomatic win by the West African nation. The US had previously limited most Ghanaian visas to three months and a single entry, citing student overstays. With the curbs lifted, Ghanaians are now eligible for five-year, multiple-entry visas. The removal of visa curbs has intensified controversy over Ghana acting as a "deportation hub." Ghana's Foreign Minister took to X to defend accepting a "limited number of pre-vetted West African nationals" from the US without criminal backgrounds, arguing it aligns with ECOWAS protocols. However, allegations of human rights violations have surfaced after Ghana reportedly re-deported some of these individuals, who had won protection in US courts, to their home countries, fuelling debate on whether the "humanitarian" deal is truly not-for-profit.
