Fighting in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo has had devastating humanitarian and economic consequences. Since May, M23 rebels, backed by Rwanda, have looted at least 500 kilograms of gold from the Twangiza mine in South Kivu province, worth around $70 million. The Chinese-operated mine accused some employees of aiding the theft and said rebels expelled residents, demolished churches, and used Rwandan technicians to gather geological data. Drone strikes have damaged infrastructure, and the company has declared force majeure. UN reports confirm Rwanda’s support for M23, facilitating territorial gains and mineral exploitation. Peace talks brokered by the US and Qatar continue amid ongoing tensions.
