Tensions are rising between the United States and Nigeria after Donald Trump threatened military action and aid cuts over alleged Christian killings. In response, China stepped in to defend Nigeria’s sovereignty, warning against "foreign interference under the guise of human rights or religion". Beijing reaffirmed its status as Nigeria’s "comprehensive strategic partner", emphasising the country's development. Nigeria is a part of China's Belt and Road Initiative. With over $1.3 billion in Chinese investment in Nigeria’s lithium and mineral sectors since 2023, the dispute now extends beyond politics—placing Africa’s largest economy at the centre of a global power struggle between Washington and Beijing.
