Algeria Backs Mediation, Chance for a Final Resolution in Western Sahara? | Firstpost Africa | N18G

Algeria has signaled a new willingness to support UN-led mediation in the long-standing Western Sahara dispute, calling for a "just and lasting" solution. This shift comes after the UN Security Council backed Morocco's autonomy plan, originally encouraged by the Trump administration and supported by some Sahrawi leaders. The conflict, rooted in Morocco's 1975 annexation of the former Spanish territory and decades of tension with the Algeria-backed Polisario Front, has defied resolution despite UN peacekeepers and multiple ceasefires. With Algeria now encouraging mediation, the possibility of compromise grows, though the Polisario's refusal of the UN plan shows the path to peace remains uncertain.
