Somalia’s security forces successfully brought an end to a violent six-hour standoff at a high-security detention center in Mogadishu after Al-Shabaab terrorists attempted a breakout. The militants, linked to al-Qaeda, launched their assault on the Godka Jilicow prison using explosives and heavy gunfire in an effort to free inmates. Authorities confirmed that all seven attackers were killed and no prisoners managed to escape. Al-Shabaab has claimed responsibility for the assault, describing it as an operation to release Muslim prisoners. The attack underscores the enduring threat posed by the extremist group, which continues to stage bombings, ambushes, and raids on military positions across Somalia despite ongoing counterterror operations.
