Egypt has accused Ethiopia of worsening floods in Sudan by releasing water from the recently inaugurated Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam. Officials in Cairo have called Ethiopia’s handling of the dam “irresponsible,” alleging that it led to severe damage in rural areas, destroying farmland and displacing residents. Ethiopia has rejected the claims, arguing that the floods were caused by rising levels in the White Nile and suggesting the dam may have actually helped reduce the impact. The disagreement has deepened long-standing tensions among Egypt, Ethiopia, and Sudan, with repeated attempts at international mediation failing to reach a resolution over the management of Nile waters.
