Park Street gangrape: TMC MP accuses woman of being sex worker

If the recent spate of incidents are anything to go by, it's not a good feeling to be a woman in India anymore. Not with a political class as we have now. Right after the President's son Abhijit Mukherjee stirred a hornet's nest by calling the Delhi rape protesters 'painted and dented' and a Congress MP in Andhra Pradesh questioned if it made sense for women to roam around the town at midnight because that's when we got independence, now a Trinamool MP Kakoli Ghosh has gone ahead and dismissed a gangrape case .

Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar, a woman Trinamool Congress MP in Kolkata, while speaking to CNN IBN said that what was being addressed as 'gangrape' by the media, was actually a deal gone sour between 'the client and the lady'.

"If you ask me about the Park Street case, I have to tell you that it was not rape. It was a deal. Which turned into a misunderstanding between the clients and the lady," she said, implying that the woman involved was a commercial sex worker.

When the Park Street rape case occurred early this year, another minister of the TMC cabinet, Madan Mitra too had raised questions about the woman's character. "What was a divorced, mother of two doing alone in a bar after midnight?" he had asked.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee too wasn't far behind in trashing the case as unimportant. "This is a conspiracy to malign my government," she said, unveiling her conspiracy-theory answer to any accusation against the TMC government.

In February this year, a woman in her thirties was gangraped in a moving car and dumped on the streets in the morning. She had reportedly been offered a lift by the six accused when she was leaving a popular nightspot on Park Street in Kolkata.

One of the accused is absconding and Damayanti Sen, the IPS officer who led the investigation and proved that the woman was raped, as opposed to the TMC government's dismissal, was promptly transferred to a position of less significance.
