Has the Delhi Police lost its credibility completely?

Given the controversy over the handling of protesters at India Gate, the death of a police constable while carrying out his duty and the arrest of eight people over it, has the Delhi police completely lost its credibility?

Expectedly, Tejender Luthra, Joint CP (Northern Range) feels that the police have not lost any credibility at all with the recent events.

"The unlawful and violent movement has resulted in the death of a colleague. If they would have moved to Ramlila grounds peacefully and ventilated their anger in a democratic fashion, this would not have happened," Luthra said.

However, AAP member Yogendra Yadav said this was the classic strategy employed by the police - where the perpetrator claims to be the victim.

He said, "These (the students) are not professional agitators. The police and government are rapidly losing legitimacy."

He argued that the agitators are against this misgovernance.

Commenting on the post-mortem report of Constable Tomar, which has come under criticism from many quarters, Yadav said, "The report does not enjoy credibility because the police does not enjoy credibility."

Former police chief Kiran Bedi also blamed the police for this trust deficit that has affected the police force of Delhi. He said, "It (the agitation) was not about youth versus the police. It was about youth versus getting heard by police and political leadership."

But how can the police win back the trust that it has lost?

"The police and the administration should call a youth convention.  They should plan immediate, intermediate and long term measures within a time bound frame,"Kiran Bedi said.
