Decoding Rahul Gandhi: Does he have it in him to lead Congress?

The Congress has a put a stop to the speculation over the role party general secretary Rahul Gandhi would play in national politics by making him the head of the Election Coordination Committee for the 2014 General elections. But is he the right person for the right job?

Psephologist and India Against Corruption (IAC) member Yogendra Yadav told CNN-IBN that Rahul Gandhi will not be right person for the job that Congress has entrusted him with.

He said, "The question is not whether he is the right person. The question is whether any leader is the right person to lead the Congress?"

According to him, there is dearth of people in the Congress because no one wants to be at the helm of an imminent defeat in 2014. "Does the Congress have anyone who wishes to lead them?," calling this situation a reflection of the overall crisis in the Congress party.

He said, "There is a sincerity that is visible in him. But one does not know whether his sincerity extends to the hard questions or is just limited to soft questions."

The country does not know his views on some of the burning issues of the day - corruption, FDI, land acquisition and economic policies, he said. He has made limited attempts to connect with his constituency even after losing there.

He said, "One needs to see whether his intelligence translates into political judgement."

However, Yogendra Yadav said that more than winning, something else would test Rahul's true credentials as a national leader. "Having lost, does he have the staying power?," he asked.
