Why China Is Blocking EV Technology Exports Now | Vantage with Palki Sharma | N18G
China has imposed new restrictions on eight critical technologies used in electric vehicle (EV) battery production. Companies transferring these technologies abroad must now obtain licences from Beijing, further strengthening China’s control over the global EV supply chain. With 70–90% of the EV value chain already dominated by Chinese firms, the move comes as trade tensions rise and rivals seek alternatives. China has previously restricted exports of gallium, germanium, graphite, and rare earths, and is now leveraging its dominance to block challengers. For countries like India, heavily dependent on Chinese batteries and machinery, the restrictions highlight a growing vulnerability.
