A powerful solar flare erupted from the Sun on Tuesday, marking the strongest of 2025. Classified as an X5.1 event, it originated from sunspot region AR4274 and released radiation that reached Earth within minutes. The flare caused a strong R3-level radio blackout over Africa and Europe, according to the US Space Weather Prediction Centre. It was followed by a coronal mass ejection travelling at about 4.4 million miles per hour, which could trigger geomagnetic storms affecting satellites, GPS, and power grids. Scientists say the storms may also produce bright auroras visible farther south than usual, signalling the Sun's approach to its next solar maximum.
