Sri Lanka Exports Tea to Pay Off Iranian Oil Debt

Sri Lanka is repaying its oil debt to Iran with tea. Cash-strapped Colombo has exported tea worth 20 million dollars to Tehran as part of the Tea-For-Oil deal which was agreed upon in December 2021. Sri Lanka’s total oil debt to Iran amounts to 251 million dollars. However, the tea exports to Tehran have been delayed due to Colombo’s dire economic crisis.
