Tensions between China and Japan have escalated after Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi said a potential Chinese attack on Taiwan could create a “survival-threatening situation” for Japan and trigger a military response. China summoned Japan’s ambassador, called the remarks provocative, and a Chinese consul posted an online threat that was later deleted. Beijing then issued a travel warning for Japan, prompting Chinese airlines to offer refunds. Japanese tourism and retail stocks fell, with analysts warning of major losses if Chinese travel declines. China also deployed coast guard vessels near the Senkaku Islands and flew a drone near Yonaguni. Taiwan criticised China’s actions and issued updated civil defence handbooks.
