Russia and Cuba have jointly criticised the U.S. energy blockade of the Caribbean island, in a show of solidarity as Cuba’s top diplomat Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla visits Moscow. During the trip, he is expected to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin. Rodríguez earlier held talks with his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov, who urged Washington to “show common sense” and refrain from military-maritime blockade of the “island of freedom.” The tensions come after U.S. President Donald Trump moved to cut off key supplies of Venezuelan oil to Cuba and warned of potential sanctions on countries that continue selling oil to Havana.
