Hurricane Melissa, a Category 5 storm, is approaching Jamaica with winds of up to 280 kilometres per hour, making it the strongest hurricane recorded in the island’s history. Moving slowly at around seven kilometres per hour, it is expected to bring hours of destructive wind, heavy rain, and storm surges up to four metres. Authorities have issued evacuation orders, and shelters are open across the island. The Red Cross says up to 1.5 million people could be affected.
