Suharto ruled from 1967 to 1998 after a failed coup and a violent anti-communist purge that killed around half a million people. His rule brought rapid economic growth but was marked by authoritarian control, censorship, and alleged corruption, with his family accused of amassing up to 45 billion dollars. President Prabowo Subianto, Suharto’s former son-in-law and one-time general, conferred the title, prompting criticism from activists who call it a “whitewash of history”. The government defends the move, saying even flawed leaders deserve recognition.
