An attempted coup unfolded in Benin on December 7, when gunfire was reported near the president’s residence in Cotonou, and soldiers seized the state broadcaster. Eight soldiers appeared on air announcing the removal of President Patrice Talon and created a Military Committee for Refoundation. They cited security failures and grievances within the armed forces. The borders were ordered closed, but the mutiny collapsed within hours. Fourteen soldiers were arrested, while others fled. Benin requested military assistance from Nigeria, whose jets and troops intervened at Benin’s request. President Talon later appeared on television to confirm that the situation was under control.
