For years Pakistan tried to woo the United States by offering itself as a partner in global security, first during the Cold War and later throughout the War on Terror. That narrative has lost its shine, and now Islamabad is attempting a fresh strategy by showcasing rare earth minerals. In a highly publicized Oval Office meeting, Pakistan’s army chief presented Donald Trump with a box of so called rare earths to attract American investment. Experts, however, question these claims, pointing out that the resources are still unverified and that Pakistan’s troubled history with international investors raises serious doubts. The big question remains, is this a real opportunity for the US or just another misleading promise from Pakistan?
