Georgia’s Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze has accused opposition leaders of attempting to overthrow his government and promised tougher action against growing dissent. His remarks came shortly after the ruling Georgian Dream party declared a sweeping victory in local elections that were largely boycotted by opposition groups. Thousands of demonstrators flooded the streets of Tbilisi during polling day, with some protesters trying to enter the Presidential Palace in defiance of government actions they view as increasingly authoritarian. The unrest reflects growing anger over Georgia’s tilt toward Moscow and concerns about democratic backsliding. Kobakhidze also blamed the European Union for interfering in the country’s internal politics, further straining ties with Brussels as the nation faces deepening political unrest.
