Tensions in Ladakh have escalated sharply. Within just two days, violent clashes have claimed lives, a strict curfew has been enforced, and internet access has been shut down. In the latest twist, well known activist Sonam Wangchuk was taken into custody in Leh right before he was expected to address the media. Authorities allege that Wangchuk was fuelling unrest and that his NGO was involved in irregular foreign funding, accusations he has rejected, describing himself as a scapegoat. The protests are centred around long pending demands for full statehood for Ladakh and its inclusion in the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution. With the region sharing sensitive frontiers with both China and Pakistan, the growing turmoil in Ladakh has serious consequences for India’s security.
