Celebrating Uncle Pai's 82nd birthday, Google paid a tribute to the creator of many Indians' childhood memories.

A comic book style doodle featuring Anant Pai welcomed Google users in India on his 82nd birth anniversary. The doodle drawn in classic Amar Chitra Katha and Tinkle style shows Uncle Pai, as Anant Pai was known to millions of young readers, surrounded by Amar Chitra Katha and Tinkle comic books.

The creator of Amar Chitra Katha and the much loved Tinkle comics, Anant Pai was born on September 17, 1929 in Karkala, Karnataka. Apart from being the brain behind these two comics and initiating a comic revolution in India, he also trained thousands of teens in personality development.

The Amar Chitra Katha which was launched in 1967 was a series devoted to a person or event in Indian history, religion and mythology. Anant Pai conceptualised of all of these and made its characters come alive. In 1980, he launched Tinkle, an integral part of many memorable childhood memories for many Indians, for over two and half decades.

Uncle Pai died earlier this year on February 24, 2011 at the age of 81 following a heart attack. Just a month prior to his death he was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award at India's first ever Comic Convention held in New Delhi on February 19-20.

Amar Chitra Katha sales are estimated to be about 3 million books per year, but the number of lives Uncle Pai's books have touched is bound to be much higher.

Google doodles have gained immense popularity over the past few years and the Google team has put out commemorative doodles on events ranging from news events, civic milestones, birthdays, death anniversaries and important dates in history.
