US Ambassador to India Eric Garcetti announced that an Indian astronaut is scheduled to embark on a mission to the International Space Station (ISS) by the end of this year, fulfilling a commitment made during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the US in 2023.
Garcetti reaffirmed the United States’ dedication to this mission, emphasising the ongoing collaboration between the two nations in space exploration.
Additionally, he revealed that the NISAR project, a joint initiative between NASA and the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) aimed at enhancing Earth observation capabilities, is also expected to be launched by year-end.
Speaking at an event commemorating the 248th Independence Day of the US, Garcetti underscored the importance of India and the US coordinating their efforts in research and emerging technologies to capitalise on each other’s strengths.
He noted the cost-effectiveness of India’s Chandrayaan 3 lunar mission compared to similar US missions, while acknowledging the unique capacities that each country possesses. Garcetti highlighted the potential synergies that arise when combining the capabilities of both nations.
In civilian nuclear energy, Garcetti mentioned that the US and Indian governments are poised to advance collaboration once the elections are concluded.
Two sites in India — Mithi Virdhi in Gujarat and Kovadda in Andhra Pradesh—have been identified for US companies to establish nuclear reactors. However, concerns have been raised regarding India’s Civil Liability Nuclear Damage Act 2010, which governs compensation in the event of a nuclear incident.
