Tesla is gearing up for the much-hyped reveal of its first fully autonomous vehicle, the Robotaxi, in what is expected to be one of the company’s most exciting launches in recent years.

After months of anticipation, the “We, Robot” event is scheduled to take place in the United States on October 10 at 7 PM PT. For viewers in India, this translates to about October 11 at 7:30 AM.

Follow up to the Cybertruck
Though Tesla has kept most details under wraps, rumours are swirling about what the Robotaxi will look like and how it will operate. Speculation suggests that the autonomous vehicle may be called the “Cybercab” and could draw inspiration from the design of the futuristic Cybertruck.

Last year, in a biography of Elon Musk by Walter Isaacson, the Tesla CEO hinted at a compact, two-door, two-seater vehicle with sharp edges and a stainless steel exterior — this design could very well be the foundation for the Robotaxi.

Interestingly, reports suggest the Robotaxi may break from traditional vehicle design by excluding a steering wheel and pedals altogether, signalling Tesla’s confidence in its fully autonomous driving technology. However, the design might face challenges from US regulators, as it may not meet current federal motor safety standards, which could cause some delays in getting the vehicle on the road.

Massively important keynote
It is expected that the event will kick off with keynotes from Tesla CEO Elon Musk and Ashok Elluswamy, the company’s Autopilot director. Following this, a virtual demo of the Robotaxi’s capabilities is expected, where the audience will get to see the vehicle in action.

This demonstration might also introduce Tesla’s much-anticipated ride-hailing app, which was teased earlier this year.

There is also chatter about Tesla unveiling the “Cybervan,” an autonomous passenger van aimed at transforming public transportation. This new vehicle, if revealed, could mark another significant step forward in Tesla’s vision for fully autonomous transport.

Potential partnerships
In addition to the Robotaxi launch, Tesla may announce a potential partnership with Uber. The ride-hailing giant has been collaborating with various autonomous vehicle companies, including Waymo and Cruise, and a Tesla-Uber partnership could be a major development in the race for self-driving dominance.

Lastly, there are whispers about the introduction of Tesla’s Model 2, which is expected to be a more affordable electric vehicle compared to Tesla’s current lineup. This could further solidify Tesla’s position in the electric vehicle market by offering a lower-cost option for consumers.

With so much excitement surrounding the event, Tesla’s Robotaxi reveal promises to be a game-changer in the autonomous vehicle landscape, paving the way for the future of self-driving transportation.
