Apple’s special event in San Jose, California, didn’t just see the launch of the iPad Mini and the 4th generation of the iPad. The launch also saw new Mac computers being presented. Here’s a look at the new Macs that were launched.
The 13-inch MacBook Pro with Retina Display: This laptop comes with Retina Display and a screen resolution of 2,560 x 1,600 at 227 pixels per inch. This one has four times the screen resolution of the previous 13-inch version of the MacBook Pro.
Not only is the screen better but the new MacBook Pro is 20 percent thinner than the previous version as it is only 0.75 inches thick. The previous version was 0.95 inches thick. Apple has done away with the Optical Drive but there is an SD card slot, Thunderbolt port, and USB 3.0.
It has an Intel dual-core i5 Ivy Bridge processor clock at 2.5 Ghz but users can re-configure this to 2.9 Ghz dual-core Intel Core i7 for extra cost. For graphics it has the Intel HD 4,000 graphics support. The RAM is 8 GB and its all-flash storage has three configurations available: 256 GB, 512 GB, or 768 GB. The battery life is seven hours.

The new iMac: This is probably the one product that will make a lot of people wonder. How did Apple get it to be so darned thin? The new iMac is only 5 mm thick at the edges and is 40 percent thinner than the previous versions.
The new iMac is available in two screen sizes: 21.5 inches and 27 inches. During the presentation, Phill Schiller showed off the evolution of the iMac revealing how far Apple’s Mac has come from 1998 when it was first launched.
The 27-inch version has a screen resolution of 2,560 × 1,440 pixels and the 21.5 inch version has a screen resolution of 1,920 × 1,080 pixels.
The 21.5-inch version has an Intel Core i5 quad-core processor clocked at 2.7 Ghz. Users can configure this up to 3.2 Ghz using Turbo Boost. There’s also a version of the iMac clocked at 2.9 Ghz with i5 which can be configured to an i7 Ivy-Bridge processor clocked at 3.1 Ghz.
The 27-inch version starts with 2.9 Ghz quad-core Intel Core i5 processor and Turbo Boost up to 3.6 Ghz. It also has another version starting at 3.2 Ghz with an i5 quad-core processor which can be configured to the 3.4 Ghz quad-core Intel Core i7 with a Turbo Boost for up to 3.9 Ghz.
Both versions have two Thunderbolt ports and four USB 3.0 ports. There is no optical drive in the new iMac. In the iMac, Apple is giving users the option of Fusion drive which combines a faster Flash Drive with the traditional Hard Drive. This will let users keep certain frequently used items on the speedy flash storage, while infrequently accessed items will go to the hard drive.
Price for the 21.5 inch iMac: $ 1,299. This ships in November.
Price for the 27-inch i,Mac: $1799. This ships in December.
