Tata’s iPhone factory fire in Tamil Nadu caused by failing thermostat control, reveals govt official
Initial investigations suggest that the fire started due to the failure of the thermostat control in one of the baths within the plant's.

The Tamil Nadu government has identified a failing thermostat control as the most likely cause behind the recent fire at Tata Electronics’ iPhone factory in Hosur, according to a report from the Economic Times.

The fire, which occurred on September 28, completely destroyed the anodising plant at the facility.

Initial investigations suggest that the fire started due to the failure of the thermostat control in one of the baths within the plant’s anodising unit.

This malfunction allowed the fire to spread rapidly through the air ducts, causing significant damage. These conclusions were part of an initial government investigation, which has already been shared with Tata Electronics executives.

Ongoing investigations
Although the thermostat issue is currently believed to be the main cause of the fire, a more detailed investigation is still underway. Once the probe is complete, the findings will be submitted to the Directorate of Industrial Safety and Health (DISH) for review.

However, this process could take some time, as the remaining debris needs to be cleared before a full investigation can proceed.

Currently, Tata Electronics is also conducting its own assessment to file an insurance claim, further delaying the government’s ability to continue its investigation. Experts note that once the government’s report is sent to DISH, it will either be approved or trigger a re-investigation. However, the likelihood of further scrutiny is low unless any evidence of misconduct is uncovered.

Apple’s involvement
Apple, a major client of Tata Electronics, has also taken steps following the incident. A team from Apple’s supplier responsibility department has been stationed at the Hosur plant since September 29.

The team is reportedly offering guidance and support to Tata Electronics as it navigates the aftermath of the fire.

In the meantime, DISH is conducting its own investigation to officially determine the cause of the fire. The results of this investigation, along with any recommended corrective actions, will be submitted once the probe is complete.
