Using AI in religion isn’t exactly new. Ever since ChatGPT made its debut, several churches across the world have used AI chatbots to help the write sermons. However, using AI for confessionals has its challenges, as the Swiss church to introduce ‘AI Jesus’ found out

Swiss church introduces AI Jesus to hear confessionals, offer spiritual guidance
There are AI-powered chatbots like Jesus AI and Ask Jesus, which lets its users have "meaningful" conversations with Christ. AI generated image.

A church in Switzerland is taking a bold step into the digital age with an innovative twist on traditional confession. In a bid to connect with the divine in a fresh way, they’ve introduced an AI-powered version of Jesus Christ.

This digital Jesus has become the centrepiece of an art project called Deus in Machina (or “God in a Machine”), and it’s all about offering spiritual advice to visitors seeking guidance. The idea might sound futuristic, but it’s rooted deeply in familiar theological principles.

Visitors stepping into the confessional booth are met with an unexpected sight: a screen displaying AI Jesus, who listens and responds to their concerns. This digital figure engages thoughtfully, offering spiritual insights based on the questions posed. The AI model, developed in collaboration with Lucerne University’s Immersive Realities Research Lab, uses the New Testament to shape its responses and, so far, has proven to align well with the church’s teachings.

When faith meets technology

While the concept might sound intriguing, reactions have been mixed. Theologians behind the project at St. Peter’s Chapel acknowledge the potential and limitations of artificial intelligence.
They see it as a fascinating yet ethically complex tool, sparking discussions about the role of AI in spirituality.

The AI Jesus has been praised for its thoughtful responses that echo Christian values, but there are also moments when it falls short, revealing the inevitable shortcomings of technology in spiritual matters.

Mixed reactions from visitors

Those who have **interacted with AI Jesus** seem divided. Some have walked away impressed, surprised at the depth and wisdom in the advice received. Others, however, feel the experience is rather generic, arguing that the responses lack the depth of a human spiritual adviser.

The differences in reactions only underscore how experimental this concept still is. It’s sparking discussions on whether AI can ever truly capture the human essence of spiritual guidance or if it will always be a pale imitation.

AI in religion: The next frontier?

The arrival of AI Jesus has prompted broader conversations about the future of technology in religious settings. There’s now talk of exploring even more immersive AI experiences, like entire digital universes populated only by AI characters.

On platforms like Friend.com, people can even act as counsellors to emotionally struggling AI personas. Then, there are AI-powered chatbots like Jesus AI and Ask Jesus, which let their users have “meaningful” conversations with Christ.
