Yesterday Motorola showed off it’s new upcoming smartphone, the Moto G which is a low-cost phone meant for emerging markets. The smartphone is priced at $179 for the 8 GB device and $199 for the 16 GB version. Under the current exchange rate, the phones will be priced at Rs 11,300 and Rs 12,600 for the 8 and 16 GB versions but it could be priced higher than this given taxes. Even so, the 16 GB device is likely to cost well below Rs 20,000, especially given Google’s aggressive pricing for its latest flagship device, the Nexus 5.
So given the likely cost of the phone, we take a look at two of the biggest rivals for the 16 GB Moto G smartphone in India, the Karbonn Titanium S9 (Rs 16,990 online) and the Micromax Canvas 4 (Rs 16,999 online) and how they compare to the Moto G.

Screen size
The Karbonn Titanium S9 has a bigger 5.5-inch screen with HD screen resolution. Compared to this, the Canvas HD screen has a 5 inch screen and the Moto G has 4.5-inch HD screen (which is a little bigger than the iPhone screen). So if a big screen is your preference, then the S9 would be your ideal choice.
Camera
In terms of camera, both the S9 and Canvas HD win. Both devices have a 5 megapixel front camera and a 13 megapixel rear camera. The Moto G comes with a 5 megapixel rear camera and 1.3 mp front camera. So no contest on that front.
Processing power
In terms of processing however, the Moto G has an edge. It comes with a Qualcomm 400 1.2 Ghz quad-core processor. The Canvas HD and the Titanium S9 both come with quad-core 1.2 Ghz processors by MediaTek. And the Qualcomm processor is definitely superior when it comes to both processing speed and battery life.
Storage
All three phones have 1 GB of RAM. The S9 and Canvas HD however support a microSD slot which allows the user to increase the memory space by up to 32 GB. The Moto G doesn’t have a microSD slot, although Google is offering 50 GB free space on Google Drive for two years with the smartphone.
Operating System
The S9 runs Android v4.2 (Jelly Bean) OS and the Canvas 4 runs Android v4.2.1 (Also Jelly Bean) while the Moto G runs the latest 4.3 Android and will get the Android 4.4 KitKat update soon. Also Moto G is pure Google with no other user interface on top. So if pure Google is what you crave and the Nexus is beyond your budget, the Moto G is the phone to go for.
