Sony Honda Mobility, a joint venture between Sony Group and Honda Motor Company, took the stage at CES 2025 in Las Vegas to unveil their first-ever electric vehicle, the Afeela 1. This sleek EV combines Sony’s tech expertise with Honda’s automotive prowess, aiming to redefine driving experiences with advanced safety features and cutting-edge in-car entertainment. Formed in 2022, the partnership has set its sights on challenging EV giants like Tesla and Rivian, particularly in the competitive US market.
The Afeela 1 boasts a maximum range of 480 kilometres on a single charge and is packed with over 40 sensors, including cameras, LiDAR, and ultrasonic tech, that power an advanced driver assistance system (ADAS). With this debut, the duo is pushing the boundaries of EV technology and making a bold entrance into the growing industry.
High-tech features for comfort and safety
Sony Honda Mobility has designed the Afeela 1 with comfort and precision at its core. It features a 3D Motion Management System for smoother rides and posture control tech to synchronise the motor, brakes, and suspension seamlessly. Inside the cabin, proprietary noise-cancelling and vibration-reduction systems ensure a tranquil environment for passengers.
Entertainment is another highlight, with Sony’s 360 Spatial Sound and individual displays at each seat, transforming the car into a “Creative Entertainment Space”. The Afeela Personal Agent, a voice-controlled assistant, handles various in-car functions, while over-the-air updates promise continual upgrades for software and features. This blend of innovation positions the Afeela 1 as a tech-savvy ride for modern drivers.
Sustainable engineering meets next-level AI
Sustainability also plays a significant role in the Afeela 1’s design. About 70 per cent of its materials are plant-based or recycled, including the steel plates and chassis.
Under the hood, it’s all about AI and computing power, with an electronic control unit boasting 800 TOPS and a Snapdragon Digital Chassis powering its features. The vehicle uses Unreal Engine 3 to visualise ADAS views, parking destinations, and routes, promising a futuristic driving experience.
Pricing, availability, and colours
The Afeela 1 starts at $89,900 (roughly Rs. 77 lakh) for the Origin trim, while the premium Signature trim, priced at $102,900 (roughly Rs. 88 lakh), includes extras like 21-inch wheels and a rear entertainment system. Available in three exterior shades — Tidal Gray, Calm White, and Core Black — and matching interior colourways, it offers style alongside tech.
Pre-orders are open with a $200 deposit, and deliveries are slated for mid-2026 in California. With its blend of advanced technology, sustainability, and comfort, the Afeela 1 aims to set new standards in the electric vehicle space.
