An engineer known as STS 3D has caused a stir online after unveiling a robotic sentry rifle powered by ChatGPT. As per a report by Futurism, which first broke the development, the device can interpret voice commands and fire with uncanny precision. The device was showcased in a video circulating on social media.
Its creation has sparked heated discussions about the potential misuse of AI, with many likening it to dystopian technology straight out of the Terminator films.

In the video, STS 3D demonstrated the rifle’s capabilities, instructing it to respond to an “attack” from multiple directions. The AI-powered system swiftly complied, aiming and firing what appeared to be blanks at designated targets. Despite the demonstration’s non-lethal nature, the implications of such technology have raised serious concerns about a future where AI could enable weapons to act without human oversight.

Futurism reports that the invention quickly caught the attention of OpenAI, which acted decisively to cut off STS 3D’s access to its services. The company confirmed that this use of its Realtime API violated its policies, which prohibit developing or using weapons or automation that could endanger personal safety. OpenAI emphasised that it proactively identified the breach and informed the developer to halt the project.
While OpenAI’s policies were updated last year, removing language that specifically restricted military applications, the company still forbids using its tools to harm others. This incident underscores the ethical challenges surrounding AI and its potential for weaponisation.

This incident isn’t the first to highlight the intersection of AI and weaponry. Last year, a US defence contractor unveiled an AI-enabled robotic machine gun capable of firing autonomously from a rotating turret. As per the Futurism report, STS 3D’s project was independent.
