XFX R7750 Black Edition Review

AMD has all its bases covered with its latest GPU generation based on the Graphics Core Next (GCN) architecture. The company started off with the HD 7900 series and made its way down to the mid-range, while the entry-level still consists of 6xxx-series cards. The HD 7770 and the HD 7750 are the lowest-cost models of AMD’s current-gen lineup and today we have a Black Edition model from XFX with a custom cooling solution. Let’s see if it lives up to its premium name.

Design and Build 

XFX’s cooling solution takes up two slots, which is typical of cards in this segment. The card itself is built well with a black PCB and an attractive aluminium frame covering the heatsink. XFX uses what it calls Ghost Thermal Technology, which is a floating heatsink design that increases airflow through the other components as well. Double Dissipation technology makes use of two fans to effectively cool the GPU as well as the other components.

Very good design and build

Connectivity-wise, we have two DVI-I ports, HDMI and DisplayPort. XFX has also added a customized exhaust vent with its own branding. The card is open on all sides, which means that warm air is dispersed in the chassis and not directly outside. XFX has also used IP-5X fans that are completely dust resistant so they won’t get bogged down with dust entering the chassis. Since the HD 7750 only requires 55W to operate, you don’t need an external power supply as it draws all the power from the PCIE slot itself. The custom card isn’t very long either so it will fit in most mid-sized chassis.

Features 

Even though this is a Black Edition card, XFX hasn’t really overclocked it much. The core is still clocked at 900MHz and the 1GB of GDDR5 RAM is clocked at 4,500MHz (effective). The memory bus is still 128-bit so the card won’t be able to handle high resolutions. The HD 7750 packs in a total of 512 stream processors and 32 ROPs. The HD7750 GPU is the same Cape Verde design as the HD7770 and is built using TSMCs 28nm fabrication process. You also get PCIE v3.0 but that really doesn’t make a big difference for a card like this.

Eyefinity ready!

The HD7750 supports up to four displays for multi-monitor gaming. You can also game in 3D with a multi-monitor setup but we wouldn’t recommend that since this card wont be able to handle all games at such a high resolution. Let’s see how well this card performs in our benchmarks.

Performance 

The XFX R7750 will easily handle games at resolutions up to 1600 x 900 while more scalable titles such as Dirt 3 and Batman: Arkham City will run smoothly even at Full HD  with everything maxed out. More intense games such as Metro 2033, which has a lot of DX11 Tessellation effects, struggle on this card. Throughout our benchmarks, the card ran whisper quiet even when stressed. The dual fans do a very good job of cooling the card as well as keeping noise levels down to a minimum. We used Furmark to stress the card and log its temperatures. At idle, we managed to get a temperature of 41 degrees Celsius whereas even under load, the temperature would not breach the 54 degree mark.

3DMark 11

3DMark is a computer benchmarking tool created and developed by Futuremark Corporation to determine the performance of a computer’s 3D graphics rendering and CPU workload handling capabilities. The latest version makes extensive use of all the new features in DirectX 11, including tessellation, compute shaders and multi-threading. We used the ‘Performance’ preset for this benchmark.

Battlefield 3

Battlefield 3 is a first-person shooter developed by EA Digital Illusions CE and is based on the new Frostbite 2 game engine. The game only supports DX10 and DX11, which enables enhanced in-game destruction with Destruction 3.0, creating more refined physics than its predecessor and quasi-realtime radiosity using Geometrics’ Enlighten technology. The game is a visual treat and a nightmare for graphics cards, which makes it perfect for our test. We used the ‘Ultra High’ preset, Post AA: High, Blur: Full, Field of View: 90, Level: ‘Fear no Evil’.

Crysis 2

Crysis 2 is a first-person shooter developed by Crytek and is based on the new CryEngine 3. Just like the first iteration of the game, Crysis 2 continues to be one of the best looking shooters to date. The settings used for this benchmark were ‘Ultra High’ preset in Adrenalin, DX11 and High-resolution texture patch.

Dirt 3

Dirt 3 is a rallying video game and the third in the Dirt series of the Colin McRae Rally series, developed and published by Codemasters. The game is extremely scalable and features DX11 tessellation effects. We used the built-in benchmark tool, along with ‘Ultra’ quality preset.

Metro 2033

Metro 2033 is a slightly older first-person shooter, which continues to bring even the toughest of graphics cards to their knees. The game has a lot of DX11 eye-candy, which really puts a strain on any GPU. All DX11 features were enabled for the benchmark and we used the “Tower” level for our test.

Batman: Arkham City

A sequel to Arkham Asylum, Arkham City features a more open-world style of gameplay as well as DX11 elements. For this test, we disabled Nvidia’s PhysX, since it would be unfair to AMD’s cards. Everything else was maxed out.

Verdict and Price in India

The XFX R7750 Black Edition is priced at Rs. 11,000, which makes it a bit expensive since you can easily get cards based on an HD7770 or  HD 850 for less, and both options would prove faster than this. There’s no denying that XFX has given a very good treatment to the stock HD 7750. The build and finish of the heatsink and components used are very good. The card performs well even at Full HD resolutions in some games, but this still doesn’t take away from the fact that it’s expensive and you can find more powerful cards for your money.
