I remember my first job when I worked as a sound engineer. the recording studio I was working at was new and had all the latest equipment. And amongst all the glitter, lay my desk, which had two beautiful 17 inch ViewSonic LCD monitors along with my G5 and Protools rig. I barely knew anything about computer monitors, but was thrilled to have the twin display. Years later, I’m in a room with Viewsonic’s LED monitor, the VX2250wm. Would it dazzle me and make me feel like I’m 23 again?
Lack of HDMI input maybe a dealbreaker for some
Design and Features
I was quite impressed when I pulled the monitor out if its box. It was glossy, jet black sleek and thin, with feather-touch menu buttons. The words 1080p and LED was written at the bottom left of the screen. My first instinct was to look at the back for connections. Surprise, surprise – no HDMI; only VGA, DVI and a 3.5 mm input for audio to the integrated stereo speakers. While most people think that HDMI and full HD screens go hand in hand, I decided to ignore the absence of the input and plough on. All you have to do is get an HDMI to DVI adapter and you can stop complaining about the missing input.
The lean, green picture machine
Setting up the monitor was very simple. All I had to do was fit the TV into the stand, and turn one screw, although the stand seemed a little flimsy, but strong enough to hold the TV up. The next step was to check out how easy it was to use. It took a little time for me to get used to the workings of the menu, as it is not very intuitive. They could’ve made it a little easier by just adding a ‘Menu’ button.
After plugging in the DV cable, and figuring out how the menu worked, and was pleasantly surprised to see quite a few options for adjusting the colour levels apart from user defined to 9300 Kelvin. Another handy feature is the Resolution Notice that tells you when to increase or decrease the resolution in accordance with what you are viewing.
Did I mention that this monitor is also environmentally friendly and saves up to 40 % more energy that a typical 22-inch monitor? There are 3 settings for energy saving: Standard, Optimise and Conserve, and I think the titles speak for themselves.
Easy to set up - just turn the screw
One thing I think that ViewSonic could have added was a base that allows you to adjust the height and tilt the monitor. However, you can wall mount the monitor or use a VESA compliant stand to prop it up better.

Performance
I had hooked up the monitor to the gargantuan Alienware gaming rig, and I can safely say that I’ve never had so much fun playing Left for Dead – EVER!! The colours, the fluidity of movement in the game and everything else seemed close to perfect. In fact, the reason I’m writing this review at 1 am is probably because I got a little carried away with the game. It’s just so much fun when you’re playing it on a screen that’s so good! Of course, the Alienware rig only added to the fun!
Left for Dead - a treat to play!
I obviously had to also bring out our test Blu-ray disc to see how this monitor fared with fast action scenes. Apart from a little drag in response time during action sequences, the VX2250wm fared pretty well. The colours were brilliant, and the blacks were deep. When I played around with the contrast and brightness settings, everything seemed to add up just fine. If I were you I’d turn down the brightness a tad, as the settings this monitor comes with calls for this action.
Finally, came the ultimate test, where I used DisplayMate to see if my views really matched the facts. And they did. I found that the black levels were really nice and deep, but the whites could do with a little more brightness. I also experienced a little noise and jitteriness in the darker greys. As for colour reproduction, it was fantastic, although the whites again, didn’t seem bright enough. But over all the tests I ran, this monitor did pretty well.
Slim form factor makes this monitor look great!
Can’t forget to talk about the sound now,can we? Well, it’s pretty average, but better than I expected from a monitor. In fact, it’s better than some of the flat screen TVs I’ve seen. But to complement the awesome picture quality, I seriously suggest a set of decent speakers to go with this monitor.
I give the VX2250wm 3 ½ stars. But I have cut one full star for the menu that takes some getting used to as well as average white levels. Another ½ star was cut for the lack of an adjustable base. But good always trumps the bad, and I say go for it! Buy this monitor, as it offers great value for money.
The view from behind ain’t bad either
Verdict
The VX2250wm is a great buy as it is not too expensive, and provides great picture, with which you can enjoy gaming, as well as movies in high definition 1080p. And the fact that you can do all his while saving precious energy should give you all the more reason to pick this baby up. Sure it doesn’t have an HDMI input, but the other good stuff (which I’m not going to repeat) more than makes up for it. So there you have it. At an MRP of Rs. 8,999, this monitor a steal!
