Seagate Momentus 750GB: Same Format, More Space

The need for large capacity internal storage isn’t only applicable for desktop users. Notebook users have always been lagging behind with smaller capacity drives, usually limited to 500 GB. Seagate’s new Momentus 750 GB should come a breather for those users who wished they could have some more disk space.

Features

The Seagate Momentus 750 GB comes in the 2.5-inch form factor and it has a height of 9.5mm. The drive runs at 7200 RPM which is faster than most other 5400 RPM notebook drives. It’s a SATA 2 compatible drive but that shouldn’t bother you as the chances of a 2.5-inch notebook drive hitting SATA2 bandwidth limitations are highly unlikely.

Seagate has incorporated the system where the drive read arm moves out of its place if the drive is in free fall. Basically, there’s a better chance of recovering your data should you drop the drive.

Test Rig Specifications

Processor: Intel Core i7-2600K CPU @ 3.40 GHz

Motherboard: GIGABYTE P67A-UD3R

Memory: Corsair Dominator GT 4 GB DDR3 (2 x 2 GB)

Hard drive: WD Velociraptor  300 GB

GPU: AMD Radeon HD 6970

PSU: Cooler Master 1000W

Performance

The drive performs well in the synthetic benchmarks scoring a respectable 88 MB/s write speed and 79.73 MB/s read speed. Synthetic benchmarks are just one side of the story though, and it’s the real world tests that really matter. Our real world tests include copying of two sets of data from one drive to another. The first set is a single 4GB file which we use to measure the sequential write and read speed. The second is a 4GB folder that has files of all sizes. Our reference hard drive is the speedy 300 GB WD Velociraptor.

The overall performance was pretty impressive for a 2.5-inch notebook drive. While writing sequential data, we noticed speeds of 94.55 MB/s which is very good and while reading, speeds touched 96.75 MB/s. It’s clear that the read and write speeds are pretty similar.

Large capacity, small format

Random read speeds weren’t too bad either. It managed to copy 4 GB of data in around 48.22 seconds. The random write speeds on the other hand were not as impressive. It only topped a 54.55 MB/s. The internal file copy test in which we copied the two sets of data from one partition to another gave a speed of 28.88 with the sequential file set. This might appear to be very low but it’s pretty OK considering that the drive has to read and write data simultaneously. Random file tests were even slower at just 16.68 MB/s.

Verdict

The Seagate Momentus 750 GB is a jump in capacity, and we’re glad to say, that it’s also a big jump in performance. While we ran the tests, we noticed the temperatures of drive to be around 31 C, which isn’t bad at all for a 7200 RPM drive.

Priced at Rs. 5,850, it’s somewhat expensive but if you’re the owner of a high-end laptop, priced at say Rs. 45,000 and above, the price being asked isn’t much. At its price, it offers the same performance as a cheap SSD but with many times the capacity.
