The PlayStation 3 may not have had the best launch line up in the world but amidst all the mediocrity there was one title which was sure to be the definitive system seller and it went by the name of Resistance: Fall of Man (FoM). We didn’t get our grubby paws on the game as and when we procured and reviewed our PS3 but we did sample two of the game’s levels in a relatively disappointing single player demo. “There’s no way this game is going to sell the PS3”, I kept telling myself and today after playing the full version I still feel that there’s no way this game’s going to sell the PS3, but one thing’s for sure; FoM is far from bad; in fact, it’s one of the best games available on the PS3 as of now.
At first glance the game does look and feel like a Call of Duty (CoD) game; only difference is that it takes place during the 20th century in a alternate universe where the world is being ravaged by an alien invasion courtesy of a hostile race called the Chimera whose soul aim is … you guessed it, world domination and it’s upto Sgt. Nathan Hale AKA you to put an end to this menace once and fore all.
Not only does FoM look like a CoD game but it even plays like one to a certain extent (except you have butt ugly aliens instead of annoying Nazis) where you’ll fight wave after wave of hostile Chimera who come in different shapes and sizes (from your run of the mill grunts to weird spider like creatures and lots more). While this may sound pretty simple on paper, playing the game like John Rambo will get you killed before you know it; this game is tough (even on medium difficulty) since the Chimera aren’t fuelled by your standard brain dead AI found in most shooters today; they will duck, take cover, flank and do their level best to make your life a living hell.

Friendly AI on the other hand isn’t all that resourceful and your squad will die in a matter of seconds (or minutes) but don’t worry; to even the odds out (and reduce your dependency on man power), the game packs in a healthy and extremely innovative arsenal. In case you didn’t know, FoM is developed by Insomniac games, the very same people behind Ratchet and Clank series for the PS2 so you have pretty whacky weapons like the Auger whose bullets can penetrate walls while it’s secondary fire creates a force field of sorts for a couple of seconds. As and when you find yourself taking a lot of damage you need to rest to refill your health bar; only difference is that if the bar gets fully depleted, you’ll need to find a health pack to restore that chunk.
Unfortunately due to certain time restraints we couldn’t check out the game’s multiplayer aspect but from what I’ve seen the game has more than enough options to keep you going for a while; you have deathmatch, team deathmatch etc and to satiate the co-op whore within you even have an offline two player co-op mode.
Now even though Resistance is a PS3 game, it’s visuals are a mixed bag; the game does look good, no doubt about it… the Chimera are gorgeously detailed and even most of the weapons look pretty sharp but certain textures look pretty hideous upfront (especially the grass) and considering the fact that this is a next generation game environmental interactivity is pretty limited so you constantly have the “look but don’t touch” feeling throughout the game.
In case you haven’t figured out by now this game is a no holds bar (and not to mention a no brainer) shooter and thanks to some solid controls, it handles firefights extremely well. The game does have its share of f-ups but it’s fast paced, intense, chaotic and entertaining and even though I can’t call it a system seller, it’s still one of the best PS3 games out there.
