Just last week we did a review of a nice portable system by Mitashi, which actually had decent options and performance quality. But this is the consumer electronics market, and without choices for us consumers it is incomplete. Thus we have a similar product by Moserbaer, a portable DVD player with screen. The model name is MDI PDP 714.
Design and Features
All portable units need to be light and well, portable in their form. This model successfully incorporates a small footprint, and a light weight. The finish is black matte all over, and is quite a simple looking, straight up no frills player when in ‘off’ state. The top panel opens out like a laptop and exposes the LCD screen on the inner surface. This panel can rotate about 270 degrees. The screen itself is non reflective, and has 2 speakers positioned below. The Moserbaer logo is positioned right at the center of these 2 speakers.
The accessories included are a car adapter, power cord, remote, triple RCA cord and a pair of earphones. The screen is a 7-inch TFT LCD model. Once open, the bottom half consists of the DVD tray, covered by a round, mechanically operated flap cover. To the right of the flap are black round flush mounted push buttons. On the top we have volume and setup, while the bottom edge is neighbor to a row of 3 buttons for play, stop and eject. The overall build quality I’m afraid is not very tough, as the screen here slightly wobbles. It’s not like the thing will break easily, but it could just use a bit of sturdiness.
__PAGEBREAK__
The right side panel has all the connections, leaving the left side panel bare. There is no TV tuner in this, though there is USB in and SD/MMC card slot. Besides we have a regular EP output for headphones and composite video output also. There is no Digital audio output, no component video etc. This model seriously conforms to a rather basic approach to video. The good part is that it plays most regular formats like DVD, VCD, DivX, MPG files, MP3s and JPEGS. The battery type is lithium rechargeable type.
No info is provided about speaker output, screen resolution etc.
Performance
We received a fully charged piece, so turning it on was simply through a slider switch on the right panel. As you turn it on the welcome screen it has the Moserbaer full color logo, with a punch line stating: Fired by Dreams. Speaking of all the layoffs happening at offices, I couldn’t help but chuckle. We played I am Legend DVD and Iron Man DivX via flash drive.
There is one major issue with the screen, and that is horizontal scan lines on the video. It’s an issue with the screen itself. I hope this is a problem with just my piece. The video is quite bright, and while viewing angles are not the greatest, about 3 people can view the screen with ease. The OSD is simple and straight up with brightness, contrast and color controls. So slight calibration is possible, and color can be nudged higher.
The sound from the speakers is enough for private viewing, and in fact through the headphones it is quite loud and satisfactory. The battery life is satisfactory, with a full charged unit going on for 3.5 hours on a DVD playback
Conclusion
At Rs. 6490, the product is an average performer. It has the issue of scan lines on the LCD, which is the major deterrent; though I must say it could be a problem with this particular piece. The video formats play fine and sound output is good, so it does have some good things going for it, though hardcore videophiles will not like it.
