Lenovo A2107 Tablet Review

Android tablets have matured from single core processors to dual core ones with quad core already flooding the China market and waiting to be introduced here pretty soon. With dual-core tablets already retailing, Lenovo has recently launched the 7-inch A2107, which features a single core processor. Read on to find out how it fares and about its chances of survival in the present market situation.

Design and Build quality

Unlike other budget Android tablets (usually the Chinese-based ones) Lenovo has done a pretty good job on the build and design front. The A2107 has a very rugged frame which looks strong and firm. The shell is made from plastic with a matte-finished rear panel that feels rubberised. The front is only glass with black borders and there are no buttons, either physical or capacitive. the chassis is around 11.5 mm thick and has rounded edges with a dark chrome colour. The power button is placed on the top (when held in portrait mode) along with the 3.5-mm audio jack and the micro USB PC interface. The right side has the volume rocker. The back panel has the company logo and a stereo speaker grill below it. The top houses the rear camera. The top also has a removable rear panel, which is a little more than an inch in size. This panel when opened, exposes the micro SD card slot and the two GSM card slots. The entire tablet looks neat, rich and very classy. The tablet weighs a good 400 grams, which is pretty heavy for a 7-incher.

Features

The Lenovo A2107 Tablet is a dual SIM GSM+GSM/WCDMA tablet only for 3G internet and no voice calls. It runs on a 1 GHz Cortex A9 processor and 1 GB of RAM. The SOC featured here is the MTK 6575 chipset, which includes the PowerVR SGX531 GPU. The display is a 7-inch LCD panel sporting a resolution of 1024 x 600 pixels. The cameras present here are the 2 megapixel main rear shooter and a standard VGA front facing. The internal storage on this one is a large 16 GB, but around 3.5 GB is used by the system storage for the data, apps and the operating system leaving the user with only 12.5 GB for data files. You do have the option of extending the storage by using a micro SD memory card. Connectivity options are Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.0, GPS, WCDMA 3G and micro USB for PC connectivity and USB OTG. Lastly, the operating system installed is Android ICS v4.0.

The product has a few too many free applications for business and entertainment that are pre-installed out of the box. These include AccuWeather, Amazon MP3, Applorer, Cut the Rope, Docs to Go, ES File Manager, Evernote, Exent Android Console, GO Text, Hotel Reservation System, imo.im, Kindle, Leadertech Registration, Lenovo App Shop, Magicshare, Mediacorp e-Book Reader, NavDroyd, News Republic, Next Issue Media, Norton Mobile Security, ooVoo , Papaya Mobile, PokeTalk, Print Anywhere, Rara, Shazam, Skype, Slacker, Sugarsync, Vendetta Online, Viki, Viewster, Zinio, 5 Card Games and 7 Digital. Bundled along with the product is just a charger and a micro USB cable. You would have to invest in a pair of headphones, a screen protector and a carry case. The tablet carries a one year warranty.

Performance

We did our standard benchmarks on the tablet to find out if this tablet can beat others in the single-core 1 GHz processor-based category. AnTuTu scored 4289, Quadrant scored 2118 and Nenamark2 gave a score of 18.9 fps. On the Linpack test we witnessed scores of 26.607 MFLOPS and 32.607 MFLOPS in single-thread and multi-thread runs respectively. Comparing the scores to the other single core tablets, the Ideatab performs almost 30-percent faster than the rest—thanks to the higher capacity RAM featured here.

Display and media

As we mentioned above, the display is a regular 7-inch TFT  panel with a resolution of 1024 x 600 pixels. The display reproduces good colours, while sharpness and the brightness levels are good too. The viewing angle is the same as with all standard display panels—one side (in this case, the top) tends to darken and go negative after a slight tilt or change in angle. Overall, the display performance is good enough and watching videos and photos are enjoyable.

Volume rocker and I/O interface

The device can play back most formats out of the box. But as usual, we recommend using a third party app such as MX player or MoboPlayer for a higher format compatibility and additional control features. We did notice that 720p videos were jittery and losing frames in between making the video almost unwatchable. 1080p videos were almost non-playable with a video and audio lag. If you plan to opt for this tablet, make sure you encode the videos to match the display resolution for a pleasurable experience. The stereo speakers are pretty good, loud and have a good audio quality. Watching standard onboard and streaming videos are good enough for a small crowd.

Battery life

We did not manage to find out the rating of the battery within this tablet. But as per the manufacturer, the claim is around 8 – 10 hours of Internet usage using the Wi-Fi or 3G mode. We did run a continuous loop of a standard definition video until the battery died and got the tablet to entertain us for almost five hours at a stretch. Using the tablet for standard use such as Internet browsing, casual gaming and music will give you around an hour or two more depending on the type of application in use. Overall, the tablet clocked standard usage time as expected from a device this size.

Verdict and Price in India

With many budget tablets sporting dual-core processors with a cheaper price tag, we do feel that at Rs 14000, this tablet will have to face the storm out there. But if you are searching for a branded tablet with SIM-based 3G support, a good build quality and decent performance, this one stands out a bit different from the rest. Though the price tag is a bit too high for just a single core packed in, the gain is on the extra internal storage, higher RAM capacity and DUAL SIM 3G option. We could recommend this tablet if you are looking for a product that will last you a longer time, has a good after sales support and definitely the possibility of a Jelly Bean operating system update in the near future. However for the present price, we feel it is a bit too high.
